Titans’ Five Upcoming Events in October and November

by Jim Stewart

We’ve flipped the calendar from September to October and the Titans Baseball Club would like to inform our community about five big events coming down the track.

The Titans’ ultra-busy calendar for October and November commences with the Annual US College Trip from October 2 to October 12. Our student-athletes will be showcased in front of US College Coaches in Illinois, Iowa, Maryland, Ohio, and West Virginia over a period of ten days.  It is a key experience for the participants as they learn the rigors of the road trip and how to balance baseball and academic life while playing US Colleges by day and studying in their hotel rooms, hotel breakfast rooms, and on the bus during off-field hours. Please see the itinerary posted below organized by our College Placement Officer Coach Denis Bailey.

Following the US College Trip, the Titans Baseball Club will focus its competitive pursuits on the Annual Orange and Navy World Series (October 21 to 28)  as drafted teams of Titans will vie for the coveted Junior and Senior championship trophy emblematic of in-house Titans baseball superiority and bragging rights for an entire off-season.  This is a great on-field opportunity for our players to enjoy some “last minute” baseball before the snow flies and we turn our attention to indoor training at the True North Fieldhouse.

Our Third Annual Movember Foundation Fundraiser will return to Milliken Park in Markham featuring a Titans Coaches versus Players’ Game on Sunday, October 29 to complete our organization’s on-field Fall Ball activities. Players make a donation to the Movember Foundation to play against the formidable force otherwise known at The Coaches’ Team that has won the last two hotly-contested ballgames.  The Titans Baseball Club has raised over $5K for the Movember Foundation over the last two years and we look forward to our players stepping up to not only contribute to this worthy charitable cause, but participate in a game to unseat the coaches from their mantel. As Shakespeare once noted, “Uneasy lies the crown.”  Registration will be forthcoming regarding the link we will use to connect to the Movember Foundation.  Our 2023 Movember Foundation fundraising goal will be $2500. This is a first-donate, first-rostered process and we’ll accept the first 25 player-donors who will face the juggernaut Coaches team at Milliken. Additionally, all members of the Titans community are invited to donate to this worthy cause.

The Titans’ Culminating Fall Event is our 2023 Awards Presentations on Sunday, November 12 at 1:00 at the Mandarin Restaurant in Newmarket. Eighteen of our ballplayers will be presented with team awards for Most Valuable Player, Most Improved Player, and Pitcher of the Year.  Three organization-wide awards will also be presented--  The Leadership Award entitled “Team over Me”; The Scholastic Award entitled “Student-Athlete of the Year”; and The Charlie Hustle Award-- at a luncheon to which the parents of the eighteen players are cordially invited to attend.  Cost for non-player or non-coach invitees will be the Sunday lunch buffet fee at the Mandarin which is $29.99. The Titans Baseball Club will be covering the buffet fees for the 18 award-winning players and 6 coach-presenters.

After the Awards Presentations, the Titans Baseball Club will begin in earnest its annual Academic and College Placement Interviews with our 95 student-athletes who will be expected to present their first semester or term report card to Education Compliance Officer Jim Stewart and to participate in an academic goal-setting session followed by a discussion with College Placement Officer Denis Bailey regarding preferred post-secondary destinations and the pursuit of academic and baseball scholarships at prospective US and Canadian universities and colleges.  The final segment of the 30-45 minute interviews will be a discussion of Fall Ball performances—the assessment of which will be conducted more often than not by the student-athlete’s Head Coach. Family members are cordially invited to attend and take notes.  When attending the interviews, we ask parents to donate a bottle of wine and a raffle prize for our Fourth Annual Golf Tournament at Tangle Creek Golf Course on Saturday, April 27, 2024.  The bottle of wine will go towards one of the tournament’s main raffle prizes—a wheelbarrow of wine—and the rest of the donations will go towards our raffle table.  We appreciate your generous support of our major social event and only fundraiser of the year.
